Autumn in New York, city of unbounded achievement! Join The Objectivist Center on October 30th for a day celebrating Objectivist values and applying the Objectivist world-view to living successfully on earth.

Objectivism is a philosophy that honors human achievement and holds that everyone should seek success in achieving happiness, building a productive career, and living a rich, flourishing life. But what is success for a person with a philosophy of individualism and objectivity? And what are the skills and practices required to achieve it? This conference brings together outstanding Objectivist scholars, activists, therapists, and entrepreneurs to answer these questions based on a rich body of experience living the philosophy of success.

9:45 — 10:45 Tibor R. Machan "An Individualist Idea of Success"
Objectivism is an individualist philosophy that advocates independence of mind and spirit. What does this tell us about the idea of success? In this talk, Tibor R. Machan offers insight on how to succeed as the person one is, and how to know when one has succeeded. Tibor R. Machan is a professor at Chapman University and is a Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution. A prolific writer and editor with numerous books and articles published, he was also editor of Reason Papers for 25 years. His latest book is Objectivity: Recovering Reality in Philosophy, Science, and Everyday Life..

11:00 — 11:45 Robert L. Bradley, Jr. "The Unsuccessful Company: Lessons from Enron"
Perception versus reality is a major theme of the rise and fall of Enron, one of the biggest business controversies in the history of capitalism. Robert L. Bradley, Jr., Ph.D. brings expertise and first-hand perspective to the subject. Formerly director of public policy analysis at Enron, Bradley is president of the Institute for Energy Research, a senior research fellow at the University of Houston, and adjunct scholar of the Cato Institute. Bradley has written five books on energy history and policy, the most recent being Energy: The Master Resource (Kendall-Hunt, 2004).

1:30 — 2:30 Nathaniel Branden "Self-Esteem and the Challenges of Success."
Self-esteem is a basic motivating factor in every person's life. In this talk, Nathaniel Branden, a founder of the organized Objectivist movement and a source of the increased appreciation of self-esteem in psychology, reflects of self-esteem in facing life challenges and reaching life goals, and on the effects of these challenges on one's sense of self. With a Ph.D. in psychology, Nathaniel Branden is a practicing psychotherapist in Los Angeles, and, in addition, is a personal and professional coach, and does corporate consulting on the application of self-esteem principles and technology to the practices of modern business. His works include The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem (1994), Taking Responsibility (1996), and The Art of Living Consciously (1997), Self-Esteem Every Day (1998), Self-Esteem at Work (1998), and A Woman's Self-Esteem (1998).

2:50 — 3:50 Charles Silver "Essential Principles of Entrepreneurship"
Charles Silver draws on his experience in founding and building companies to extract the essential principles behind success in any business endeavor: thinking for oneself amongst tremendous pressure to follow the herd, and total commitment to the facts of reality. Mr. Silver is currently the CEO and Chairman of the Board of San Diego based RealAge Inc., a global health media company. Mr. Silver has been developing, building, and managing new businesses for over 20 years including the creation of a leading hedge fund. He began his business career in Michigan, where he founded the Oil Dispatch franchise, which grew to be the largest independent quick oil change operator in the state before merging with Jiffy Lube.

4:20-5:20 Barbara Alpern Lehman "Living a Rational, Productive Life (Personally and Professionally)"
In this session, Barbara Lehman will explore her lifelong journey with Objectivism, covering such topics as: Living an Objectivist life by embracing individualism, productivity, and reason; Integrating her philosophy as a business woman, entrepreneur, mother, community leader, writer, lecturer, and friend; The importance of becoming a "brand name" in one's field; Key values and Objectivist learnings that helped guide her decisions under challenging circumstances. Barbara Alpern Lehman is Chief Marketing Strategist for HMI (Tempe, AZ), with a focus on developing integrated communication strategies for the beauty, health, and medical industries. She has been CEO of Alpern Lehman (Scottsdale, AZ) and President/Creative Director of York/Alpern (Los Angeles, CA), and has authored two strategic marketing guides: Reaching Women: The Way to Go in Marketing Health Services and Hitting the Right Nerve.
